Modular Portal Crane
Armstrong Manufacturing was tasked with the conceptual and detailed design for the development of a travelling overhead gantry crane.

Installed manufactured single-bay machine design
The machine required:
-
Two actuated lifting points designed to a specified WLL (working load limit)
-
North South East West movement in a stationary position
-
Mobile, actively controlled crane movement in factory facility

We were required to develop the machine with the client given various current and future manufacturing processes used in the factory facility.
The solution was to be modular (single and two-bay portal design) in design for adaptation to various existing infrastructure and processes within the factory building. Particular constraints in the facility also existed that required existing structures survey and application within the design.

Our design process consisted of:
-
Simple conceptual sketch/design with the client
-
Building and site survey
-
Detailed 3D modelling of the design
-
Detailed engineering drafting for fabrication drawings
-
Partial project submissions to incorporate stakeholder feedback and to incorporate client feedback at all stages
-
Management of structural and mechanical engineering consulting services
-
Automated manufacture processing data production and control
-
Manufacturing facility liaison and reporting
-
Machine documentation production and control

Our objectives for the project were to:
-
Deliver a product that meets modern engineering methods for design, manufacturing and project management
-
Design a modular machine that suits multiple applications in the factory
-
Give control to the client over their intellectual property
-
Deliver highly detailed content to compliment their factory asset
-
Deliver data that compliments modern quality management systems and compliance requirements
-
Use a design and quality management system to iterate and optimise the design in a prompt and efficient process

The single-bay machine manufacture, electrical and mechanical fitting was completed at a local facility. We were very pleased with the results.
