Tunnelling Machines

Armstrong Manufacturing was given the opportunity to complete detailed design and supply of manufacturing information for two large tunneling machines. These are 1800 mm and 2000 mm diameter machines used for passing large concrete pipe culverts through earth material. Often used for stormwater management.

The machine required:

  • Modular design for swapping between rock cutting and soil cutting hardware

  • Adaptation to material excavation hardware used within tunneling

  • Adaption to large electric drive and transmission units

  • Tunneling guidance and control system hardware (electric and hydraulic)

We produced the concept and detailed 3D model for the project. This was used to automate the manufacture and processing of parts used in the machine.

Our design process consisted of:

  • Simple conceptual sketch/design with the client

  • Existing hardware reverse engineering and 3D modelling

  • Detailed 3D modelling of the machine

  • Detailed engineering drafting for fabrication drawings

  • Automated manufacture processing data production and control

Our objectives for the project were to:

  • Develop a system adaptable to various size [diameter] tunneling machines

  • Simplify the manufacture and processing of the machine for the client

  • Improve accuracy and format of cutting hardware for optimal material removal rate

The machine build was completed at the clients local facility. The machines have since been used successfully at various locations in Australia and completed 100's of metres of tunnels.
